Single Burning Item SBI

Compliance

EN 13823, EN 13501-1

The Single Burning Item (SBI) is a method specified in EN 13823 to determine the reaction to fire performance of building products (excluding floorings) when exposed to a single burning item (a propane-fueled sand-box burner). During the test, the specimen is mounted on a trolley and placed in the corner of the test chamber, under an exhaust system. The specimen's reaction to fire is observed through a window, and key parameters are measured and reported, including Total Heat Release (THR600s), Total Smoke Production (TSP600s), Fire Growth Rate Index (FIGRA
0.2MJ), Smoke Growth Rate (SMOGRA), and Lateral Flame Spread (LFS). The SBI test is a fundamental part of the European fire classification system (EN 13501-1), where products are classified into classes ranging from A2 to F based on their performance.

  • Test Name: Change "The Single Burning Item (SBI) is a method to determine the reaction to fire of building products (excluding floorings)" to "EN 13823: Reaction to fire tests for building products — Single-burning item (SBI)." This is the official title of the standard.

  • Test Purpose and Procedure: Clarify that the test measures the reaction to fire performance of building products when they are exposed to thermal attack by a single burning item. The sample is placed on a trolley in a test chamber. The test measures heat release, smoke production, and other parameters.

  • Key Parameters: Replace the informal list of parameters with the official terminology from the standards:

  • Heat Release Rate (HRR),

  • Total Heat Release (THR),

  • Fire Growth Rate Index (FIGRA),

  • Smoke Production Rate (SPR),

  • Total Smoke Production (TSP),

  • Lateral Flame Spread (LFS).

  • You can also specify the specific indices used, such as FIGRA0.2MJ? and SMOGRA.

  • Classification: State that the results from the SBI test are used for the European fire classification system according to EN 13501-1. The classes are A2, B, C, D, and E. The classification is based on the performance thresholds of the measured parameters.

  • Apparatus Components: Use more precise language for the equipment components. For example, instead of "test room," use "test chamber." For "stainless steel ducting," specify it as the exhaust system duct. Mention that the bi-directional probe is for measuring the flow rate in the duct.
