Flame Propagation Test Apparatus (IEC 60332-1 & IEC 60332-3-24)

Procedure for Flame Propagation Test (Single Insulated Cable – IEC 60332-1)

a) A test specimen of single insulated cable (600 mm length) is mounted vertically.

b) The ignition source is stabilized as per IEC 60695-11-2, with the burner inclined at 45°.

c) The flame is applied to the cable at a vertical distance of 475 mm.

d) After the prescribed flame application time, the flame source is removed.

e) The test is repeated two additional times on fresh specimens.

f) Results are evaluated in accordance with acceptance criteria for flame spread, charring, and self-extinguishing behavior.

Procedure for Flame Propagation Test (Bunched Cables – IEC 60332-3-24)

• Multiple cables are mounted vertically on a ladder-type test rig.
• A gas burner (20 kW flame source) is applied for a defined duration.
• Flame spread is observed and measured along the cable bunch.
• The performance is assessed against the requirements for Category C in IEC 60332-3-24, ensuring limited flame spread beyond the defined height.

Apparatus Description

The Flame Propagation Test Apparatus consists of:

• Stainless steel chamber with anti-corrosion interior coating (extended durability).
• Stainless steel sample support arm for rigid vertical mounting.
• 1 kW air–gas pre-mixed burner, with stable flame output.
• Flowmeters for precise propane and air flow control.
• Individual regulators and pressure gauges for gas and air.

Floor-mounted integrated fume cupboard for safe exhaust and ventilation.
