Bomb Calorimeter – Technical Description (as per ISO & ASTM standards)

The Bomb Calorimeter is designed for determining the absolute gross calorific value (heat of combustion) of solid and liquid fuels, polymers, and other combustible materials, under controlled and standardized conditions. The instrument conforms to ISO 1716, DIN 51900, ISO 1928, ASTM D240, ASTM D4809, ASTM D5865, ASTM D1989, ASTM D5468, and ASTM E711.


Principle of Operation

  • A test specimen of specified mass is combusted at constant volume in a high-pressure oxygen atmosphere within a sealed oxygen bomb.
  • The calorimeter is calibrated using certified benzoic acid as per reference standards.
  • The temperature rise of the calorimetric water jacket is precisely measured.
  • The gross heat of combustion is determined after correcting for:
    • Heat losses,
    • Formation of nitric and sulfuric acids,
    • Latent heat of vaporization of water (per ISO/ASTM calculation methods).

Reported Results

  • Gross Calorific Value (Higher Heating Value – HHV) in MJ/kg.
  • Optionally, Net Calorific Value (Lower Heating Value – LHV) can be calculated as per ISO 1928 and ASTM D5865.
